15 Leftover Halibut Recipes You’ll Fall for

A few years ago, I felt guilty discarding halibut fish leftovers, especially when I know full well how nutritious this type of fish is.

Then, the tender, finely-textured, and easily-handled halibut meat enticed me to try out different leftover halibut ideas.

And guess what?

Not only did transforming the leftover halibut add to my list of kitchen triumphs, but it was also easy and fun to prepare.

Finally, I couldn’t wait to get plenty of halibut leftovers to satisfy my adventurous cooking.

You, too, can indulge your gourmet taste buds with these mouthwatering leftover halibut recipes!

This list contains some of the best leftover halibut dishes that I’ve ever tried out over time.

Now:

Let’s enjoy the best part by devouring one recipe after another!

1. Gluten-Free Halibut Cakes

Would you like to stretch your halibut leftovers to make tomorrow’s delicious appetizer? No problem!

While this healthy halibut cake recipe uses fresh halibut, I’ve tried it with leftovers. This actually sped up the preparation time without sacrificing the delicious savory flavors of the cakes.

Besides your skinless halibut, you’ll need mashed potatoes, margarine, green onions, an egg, instant polenta, vegetable oil, salt, and pepper.

Note that you may need to adjust the portions of the ingredients if you have less than one pound of fish.

2. Leftover Halibut Sandwich Spread

You can make this super easy snack in no time if you’re crazy busy.

This leftover halibut sandwich recipe makes a great choice when you have too little left but don’t want to let it go to waste.

Have you got five minutes?

This leftover recipe won’t take long to prepare.

However, a key takeaway is to use your halibut fish when cool to flake it easily.

3. Halibut Rolls from Leftovers

Are you into pastries? Me too!

This flavor-bursting croissant sandwich is the deal!

All you need to do is mix your flaked halibut leftovers with celery, red pepper, black olives, parsley, green onions, and ground pepper.

It gets better:

Prepare this ‎scrumptious herb mayonnaise by mixing mayonnaise with fresh dill, thyme, oregano, basil, shallot, and one garlic clove.

Finally, put a generous spoonful of the mixture into your split croissants.

Serve it with fresh fruit, and enjoy!

4. Halibut Alfredo Fettuccine

Halibut Alfredo Fettuccine

Once, I didn’t know what to make with leftover halibut.

So, I decided to come up with this toothsome halibut alfredo fettuccine recipe. Amazingly, it turned out well!

The luscious sauce is a mixture of onions, garlic, black pepper, butter, fish sauce, heavy cooking cream, egg yolk, and Parmesan.

It’s important to whisk well while adding the yolk and Parmesan to avoid forming lumps.

Lastly, I dropped in the leftover halibut cubes and mixed them.

5. Leftover Halibut Tacos

These indulgent halibut tacos will turn around your halibut steak leftovers chilling in your fridge.

So what do you need, exactly?

Simply mix diced garlic, onion, tomato, avocado, pickled jalapenos, black beans, olive oil, blackberry vinegar, salt, pepper, and cumin.

In a heated pan, put the tortilla, then the halibut. Toss your flavorful salsa over your fish.

Now:

Wrap your tortilla and sink your teeth into it as I did!

Don’t forget to add some accompaniments with these fish taco sides.

6. Halibut Salad

This unique halibut salad is one of the best leftover halibut ideas.

I think you’d best rush to your kitchen before your halibut leftovers become history. I’ve been there, too!

Just sear your halibut with little oil, let it cool down, and then flake it into pieces.

In a bowl, mix your browned fish with mayonnaise, chopped scallions, celery, and dill. Add your salt and pepper seasoning.

And enjoy the sweet taste!

7. Leftover Halibut Dip

So you had seafood the other day and don’t know what to do with leftover halibut?

I was thrilled when I laid my hands on this fancy fish dip that you can ideally use to repurpose your battered halibut.

First, pull the breading all off. Then, in a bowl, shred the fish. Add sour cream, mayonnaise, chopped spring onions, and voilà!

Interestingly, when I let this dip sit in the fridge for about a day, it tasted yummier!

8. Halibut and Mashed Potato Cakes

I know! That’s the second fish cakes recipe, but it’s different. I promise!

This one was a hit, even though it’s originally a salmon leftovers recipe. I had a good deal of mashed potato and halibut leftovers. So why not do the same but with leftover halibut?

Here’s how:

Put in a bowl cooked halibut, mashed potatoes, an egg, Dijon mustard, capers, dill, panko breadcrumbs, salt, and pepper. Then, mix and bake.

But here’s the secret to a perfect texture: Make sure your ingredients are cold.

9. Seafood Soup

Seafood Soup Recipe

This idea isn’t a brainer! Whenever I have halibut leftovers, I toss them in my seafood soup.

The sweetness of the halibut meat enriches the soup’s flavor.

Just sauté veggies: fennel, onion, leeks, and celery. Then add garlic, red pepper, oregano, thyme, parsley, and bay leaves.

Cook until you get hypnotized by the aroma. Add clam juice and simmer.

Afterward, add the fish and seafood. Let the steam cook it through for six minutes only.

10. Halibut Spreadable Appetizer

You can create this delicious fish spread using cold flaked salmon or halibut leftovers.

You only need to mix them with yogurt, lemon juice, and chives.

Afterward, whizz them up in the food processor and serve with potato chips as a spread or dip.

Your family won’t get enough of this creamy and tangy spread.

The main advantage of this recipe is that you don’t need to reheat fish, which maintains the fresh flavor of the fish.

11. Thai Coconut Soup

This brothy coconut-flavored soup will transform your halibut leftovers.

Originally, this recipe is made with shrimp. However, I used my shredded halibut, and it was the bomb!

All you need is:

Fresh ginger, lemon grass, red curry paste, chicken broth, fish sauce, mushroom, lime juice, and coconut milk.

It’ll make a very palatable side dish to any main course. Plus, your friends will thank you for it!

12. Leftover Fish Egg Roll

This dish works like magic for a charming breakfast!

The recipe is extremely simple:

Season the veggies with salt and pepper, as you wish, to taste. Mix. Mix. Mix.

In a frying pan, heat some vegetable oil and swirl around half of the mixture.

With a spatula, gently lift the mixture edge to roll it. Then, flip it on both sides to cook through.

Repeat for the other half and bon appetit!

13. Jacques Pépin’s Pasta Gratin with Fish and Spinach

If you’d like to make the main course out of your halibut leftovers, this comforting casserole will save the day!

I personally love this recipe because it’s both economical and tasty.

You’ll only need farfalle pasta, flour, Parmesan cheese, butter, milk, spinach, light béchamel sauce, black pepper, and salt.

Put it all in a baking dish in your hot oven till you get a light golden top. Finally, serve your mouth-watering dinner on the table.

14. Halibut Fish Pie

Halibut Fish Pie recipe

If you’re a big fan of comfort food, this classical fish pie lunch will make your day.

I usually start with the sauce:

Melt a cube of butter in your pan, and add flour. When it’s smooth, gradually pour milk and whisk.

Whether baked or fried, I shred the halibut fish, add it to the sauce, and mix it with the veggies.

Afterward, cover with mashed potatoes and bake for 25 minutes until you get a crunchy top.

15. Fried Rice with Veggies

This fried rice recipe is definitely one of my favorites because it’s versatile.

You can definitely customize it according to the leftovers you have.

It couldn’t be easier:

Use your leftover halibut cubes along with rice and veggies to make this flavorful side dish.

You’ll find the flavor of fried rice unforgettable, especially when coupled with the delectable taste of oyster or fish sauce.

Great Ways to Store and Reheat Halibut Leftovers

I always keep my leftover halibut freshness and flavor by avoiding wrong reheating methods, which would dry out the halibut’s tender meat.

Best Way to Store the Halibut Leftovers

Once you’re done eating, store the rest of your fish in the fridge at 40°F or less. This is to avoid leaving the fish at room temperature, which can spoil it.

Ideally, you can store fish in a sealed container for two to three days.

However, if you won’t reheat it soon, place it in the freezer. It’s safe to freeze it for up to one month.

Either way, mark your containers with the freezing or storing date.

This way, you know when it’s okay to use and ensure preserving its flavor, as well!

Helpful Tips to Reheat Halibut Leftovers

To maintain the fresh texture of your halibut fish, try to gently heat it using moist heat.

If you heat it too high, up to 135 °F, it’ll lose its tenderness.

Here are the steps for reheating breaded fish safely:

  1. Set the oven to 375 °F
  2. Put the leftover breaded fish in a lightly oiled pan
  3. Use kitchen paper towels to dry any excess moisture
  4. Bake until the coating gets crisp

This may take around 15 minutes, give or take. Turning the fish on both sides will improve heating results.

In order to heat leftover unbreaded fish:

  1. Set the oven to 375 °F
  2. Arrange the unbreaded fish on aluminum foil
  3. Sprinkle melted butter over the fish
  4. Fold the foil to wrap it around the fish
  5. Bake for about 15 minutes in a shallow pan

Make sure you wrap the fish loosely to allow steam to gather and heat your leftover fish while keeping it tender.

Here’s the most important part:

Reheating fish in the microwave will mess up our leftover halibut recipes.
