Ina Garten Vanilla Extract Recipe

Homemade vanilla extract is one of those ingredients you gotta have in your pantry, people!
Ina Garten’s recipe has become my favorite because it’s straightforward and relies on quality ingredients.
The key to this recipe is using the freshest vanilla beans you can find—they should be plump and fragrant.
Split the beans down the middle to expose the seeds, which is where all the rich essence comes from.
The alcohol you choose also matters; I like to use vodka because it keeps the extract neutral and versatile.

Ingredients

  • 5 Vanilla Beans whole
  • 1 cup Vodka
  • 1 Jar sealable

Instructions

  • Place the vanilla beans on a cutting board.
  • Using a sharp knife, carefully slice each bean lengthwise to expose the seeds.
  • Be sure to keep the beans intact.
  • Add the sliced beans to the jar.
  • Ensure that the jar is tall enough to fit the beans comfortably.
  • You want the beans to be fully submerged in the liquid.
  • Pour the vodka into the jar over the vanilla beans.
  • Seal the jar tightly with a lid.
  • This ensures no air gets in and affects the extraction process.
  • Shake the jar gently to mix the beans and vodka.
  • Place the jar in a cool, dark place to infuse.
  • This will take at least one month for the flavors to develop fully.
  • Check the extract periodically.
  • Give it a shake every week for improved flavor.
  • Enjoy once it reaches your preferred strength.
